How to Act When You Run Into Your Ex in the Same Neighborhood

2026-06-11 · about 4 min read

The same neighborhood, the same subway station, the same regular cafe. When your daily routines overlap after a breakup, running into each other is only a matter of time. The problem is that if you fail to control your expression during those 3 seconds, you may replay it for days. If you decide on a script in advance, your body will know what to do when the moment actually comes.

Decide on a “3-second scenario” before you run into them

If you react on the spot, you may end up with an awkward smile or avoidance that looks like you are running away. Both send the message that you still care. Think of 3 places where your paths often overlap, such as the supermarket, your commute, or a cafe, and decide in advance how you will act in each place.

  1. If your eyes meet, give one light nod for about 0.5 seconds. Do not wave.
  2. Do not stop; keep walking at your usual pace. If you slow down, it can be read as “please talk to me.”
  3. If they talk to you, end it with one sentence, “Oh, hi. I have plans, so I’ll head out first,” and keep moving.
  4. Decide that once you get home, you will not replay the scene for more than 30 minutes. Setting a timer can help.

Here is what sounds clean in real life

The longer the conversation goes on, the more likely you are to say something you regret. If you memorize a few short, calm sentences, your mouth can move first even when your mind goes blank.

  • Just a light greeting: “Hi, hope you’re well. I’m going to head out.”
  • When they ask how you are: “Yeah, I’m doing well. You take care too.” (Do not ask the question back.)
  • If they ask to get back together: “I’m not there right now. I’ll contact you later when I’ve sorted things out.”

Slightly shift your daily route for a while

You do not need to avoid them completely, but during the first 2 to 3 weeks of recovery, slightly changing your route can make you feel much calmer. Small changes are enough, such as going to a cafe one block away instead of your usual place or adjusting your commute by 10 minutes. But this is only temporary. You cannot hide forever, so the goal is to gradually return to your original routine with the mindset that you will not let your neighborhood be taken away from you.

💡
Note: Right after running into them, you may feel an urge to check their social media account. In that moment, put your phone in your bag and try to hold out until one song ends. Most urges settle within those 3 minutes.

How not to fall apart alone

The hardest moment is the night of the day you run into them. Choose one “emergency contact” in advance, and on the day it happens, send that friend just one line: “I saw XX today. Nothing happened, but I feel kind of dazed.” Replaying it alone and telling one person about it lead to completely different recovery speeds.

If there is a chance you will run into them, decide your reaction in advance

It is hard to avoid seeing an ex in the same neighborhood. That is why you need a 3-second scenario. If you decide in advance to greet them briefly when your eyes meet and not let the conversation drag on, you reduce impulsive reactions.

In the early stage of recovery, even slightly changing your usual cafe or time slot can make you feel more at ease. On the night of the day you run into them, send one line to a trusted friend so you do not replay it alone.
