Finding Walking Routes Near Train Stations in Korea

2026-06-11 · about 4 min read

One of the pleasures of train travel is being able to start walking as soon as you get off. Before dragging your luggage far across town, even a walk within a 20-minute radius of the station can give you a good feel for the city. The key is to decide in advance on a walkable route within about 1 to 1.5km of the station before you arrive.

3 criteria for choosing a station walking route

  • Distance: The starting point should be within a 10- to 20-minute one-way walk from the station, about 700m to 1.4km.
  • Elevation: If you are carrying a large bag, focus on flat or gently sloped paths, ideally with a grade of 5 degrees or less.
  • Returnability: A loop route that brings you back to the station makes luggage storage and train schedule management easier.

5-minute pre-arrival research sequence

  1. Open a map app, place the station at the center, and roughly check a 1km radius.
  2. First look for linear routes such as rivers, streams, parks, and old streets, since they are clues to walkable paths.
  3. Check the walking time to the route starting point, and if it exceeds 15 minutes, consider another option.
  4. Allow at least 30 minutes between your return to the station and the departure time of your next train.
  5. Check the location of station lockers in advance and plan to store heavy luggage there.

Sample route plans by time available

Time availableRoute lengthSample plan
30 minutes1.5 to 2kmStreet in front of the station → nearby plaza or riverside → return to station
1 hour3 to 4kmStation → loop around a park → one cafe → return
2 hours5 to 6kmStation → old street → hill with a good view → market → return

For easy planning, estimate walking speed on flat ground at about 4km per hour. In 1 hour, that is about 4km, but after allowing time for photos and breaks, you will usually walk around 3km in practice. Add one cafe or one scenic viewpoint, and you have a satisfying one-hour route.

Managing luggage and budget

Heavy luggage is the enemy of a good walk. Leave large bags in a station locker, usually 2,000 to 3,000 won for a small locker and 3,000 to 4,000 won for a medium one, and walk with just one small bag. With a bottle of water, 500ml and about 1,000 won, plus a charged phone, even a 2-hour route feels manageable.

Managing your return time is most important. Leave at least 20 to 30 minutes between your planned route finish time and your train departure. If you account for retrieving luggage from a locker, moving to the platform, using the restroom, and buying a snack, a tight schedule can easily lead to missing your train.

💡
Tip: Capture the return route from your walking route’s starting point to the station in advance, so if your legs get tired, you can return by the shortest route without getting lost.
