| Tool | Recommendation | Expected price |
|---|---|---|
| Manual hand grinder | Ceramic burrs, adjustable grind size | 20,000~50,000 won |
| Coffee beans | Roasted within the past 2 weeks, in 100g portions | 5,000~10,000 won |
| Dripper + paper filters | For 1~2 servings | 10,000~20,000 won |
| Kitchen scale | 0.1g increments | 10,000~20,000 won |
An initial budget of 60,000~100,000 won is enough. The difficulty is two out of five stars; if you can cook instant noodles, you can get the hang of it in a week.
Finding the Right Grind Size
- Pour-over: about the texture of coarse salt. When you rub the grounds between your fingers, the particles should feel clearly distinct.
- French press: coarser, around the texture of cracked black pepper.
- Espresso: very fine, just slightly coarser than flour.
- If the grind is too fine, the coffee turns bitter and muddy; if it is too coarse, it tastes weak and sharply acidic.
Your First Cup with Freshly Ground Beans
Brew one cup and you will immediately notice how much the flavor changes with grind size. If it tastes too acidic, grind a little finer next time; if it tastes bitter and muddy, grind a little coarser.
💡
Note: Store beans in an airtight container in a cool, dark place, not in the refrigerator. The refrigerator absorbs moisture and odors, which actually ruins the aroma.
