Taking Time to Sort Out Your Feelings When an Ex Comes to Mind

2026-06-11 · about 4 min read

When someone from the past comes to mind, it does not necessarily mean you still have lingering feelings. It is a natural process in which the brain automatically replays familiar memories. The problem is not that the thought appears, but that you hold onto it and get pulled along by it for 30 minutes at a time. If you have a simple routine for letting the thought pass when it comes up, recovery can move much faster.

A 3-step calming method to use the moment they come to mind

  1. Acknowledge that the thought came up — say to yourself, 'Ah, I thought of them again' (suppressing it only makes it grow).
  2. Set a 10-minute timer and write the feeling exactly as it is in a notebook. Do not romanticize or blame; write only the facts, such as 'Because it rained today, I remembered sharing an umbrella together.'
  3. When the timer rings, close the notebook and do one action you decided on in advance — wash the dishes, take a short walk, or listen to one favorite song.

Create a 'truth board' for the relationship

When you miss someone, your brain tends to show you only the good scenes. That is why you need a memo listing the reasons the relationship ended. In your phone's notes app, write down three real reasons 'I left / we broke up,' and read them whenever you feel shaken.

  • When you want to contact them, read the memo first → if you still want to send the message, delay it for 24 hours.
  • On social media, 'mute' feels less heavy than blocking and helps prevent accidental exposure.
  • Do not throw away gifts or photos; put them in a box and move them somewhere out of sight — if it is hard to get rid of them right away, a 'storage box' is enough.

A new routine to fill the empty space

The empty time after a breakup is the most risky. Put new plans in advance into the time slots you used to spend together, such as 9 p.m. on weekdays or weekend afternoons. Having something else scheduled at that time is more effective than simply trying to endure it alone.

Some days, only the good memories come back

After a breakup, the good scenes can feel strangely clearer. That does not mean those memories are false. But if you look only at them, it becomes harder to remember why the relationship ended as a whole. That is why you need a reality memo to read when you feel shaken.

In a reality memo, write facts rather than blame. If you write things like, “We avoided conflict and the same problems kept repeating,” or “I often felt anxious in that relationship,” it becomes easier to return to your center even when longing rises again.

💡
Note: Try counting the days on your calendar from 'D+1.' After about 21 days, you will usually notice for yourself that the memories come up much less often. The number becomes evidence of your recovery.
