Quick Hand Sketches to Enjoy on a Single Sheet of Paper

Do not try to draw well; just fill one sheet first

The biggest enemy of hand sketching is the fear of “what if I can’t draw well?” Even if you ruin one sheet of paper, you lose less than 100 won, so the first step is to let go of trying to draw perfectly. Our goal is not to create a finished artwork, but to build the habit of moving your hand for 5 minutes.

Starter supplies and budget

There is absolutely no need to buy expensive tools from the start. You can begin today with scrap paper lying around at home and a ballpoint pen. Still, if you want a slightly better drawing feel, the items below are more than enough.

SupplyRecommended specEstimated price
PaperA4 copy paper or a plain notebook0~3,000 won
Pen0.3~0.5mm black gel pen1,000~2,000 won
PencilOne HB or 2B pencil500~1,000 won
Optional: gray brush penFor light shading3,000~5,000 won

With a total budget of 5,000~10,000 won, you will have enough to draw every day for a whole month. The difficulty level is one out of five stars; anyone who can write letters can start today.

Your first 30 minutes: follow this order

  1. Set a timer for 5 minutes and place an A4 sheet horizontally. With a pen, try drawing a mug on your desk without looking at it, simply “letting your hand move” (the key is not drawing from observation).
  2. For the next 5 minutes, draw the same mug again, this time in one continuous line without lifting the pen from the paper. This is often called one-line drawing.
  3. For the third 5 minutes, look at the cup and slowly trace only its outline. Keep your eyes 80% on the cup and 20% on the paper.
  4. For the remaining time, choose one item from your hand, shoes, or a potted plant, and draw three more sheets in the same way.
  5. Finally, write the date in the corner of the one you like best and keep it.

Small devices for drawing consistently

If you try to draw something different every day, you will tire quickly. Fixing one theme, such as “the same object for 30 days,” reduces the burden and makes your progress visible. For example, even if you draw only your own hand for an entire month, by the end you will notice how clearly you have changed since the first day.

💡
Note: Do not draw lines slowly; pull each line through in one motion. A bold, quick line looks much better than a shaky slow one.
