Filling an Evening with a Jigsaw Puzzle

An Evening Filled by Hand Instead of a Screen

Beginner Supplies and Budget

  • Beginner jigsaw puzzle, 300-500 pieces: 8,000-18,000 won
  • A wide flat surface, such as a dining table or folding table, or a puzzle mat: 0-20,000 won
  • Three to five small plates or trays for sorting pieces: use what you already have at home
  • Desk lamp, the brighter the better for distinguishing colors: use an existing item
  • Optional: a zipper bag or frame for storing the completed puzzle

You can get everything you need for your first puzzle for under 20,000 won. The most important decision is not the equipment, but the number of pieces. If you buy a 1,000-piece puzzle on enthusiasm alone, you may tire of it within a few days and leave it unfinished, so 300 pieces is a good choice for your first attempt.

Difficulty depends not only on the number of pieces, but also on the image. Pictures with large areas of the same color, such as sky or sea, are much harder even with fewer pieces. If you are a beginner, choose a landscape or animal image with varied colors and shapes.

Assembling in the Standard Order

  1. Pour out all the puzzle pieces and turn every piece face up.
  2. First, sort out only the edge pieces with one straight side.
  3. Connect the edges to complete the outer rectangular frame.
  4. Sort the remaining pieces onto plates by color and pattern.
  5. Fill the inside starting with distinctive areas, such as letters or clear patterns.
  6. For large single-color areas, such as the sky, match pieces by subtle color differences and shape.
  7. Finish the last empty spaces by fitting in the remaining pieces according to their shapes.
💡
Note: Do not work on the inside until you have completed the edge. Once the frame is in place, it becomes much easier to judge where the inside pieces belong.

You do not have to try to finish it in one night. It is also fine to enjoy it in 30-minute sessions. Once completed, take a photo of the picture or glue it and put it in a frame, and the small sense of achievement that filled your evening can hang on your wall.
