How to Feel Excited Again When You Think You’ve Hit a Slump

2026-06-11 · about 4 min read

If texting starts to feel like an obligation, and even when you meet you only look at your phones before parting ways, it may be a sign of a relationship slump. But a slump does not mean love has gone cold. It means “familiarity” has covered up “attention.” Even small actions that lift that cover can change the mood more than enough.

First, check whether it really is a slump

Before vaguely worrying, “Have my feelings faded?” look back over the past 2 weeks. If 3 or more of the items below apply, it is time to start managing the slump.

  • When you meet, you repeat only “What should we eat?” instead of having new conversations
  • You cannot think of the other person’s strengths, and only their flaws stand out
  • Dates feel like a fixed “route” and are the same every time
  • Physical affection or compliments have noticeably decreased compared with a month ago

4 steps to turn the spark back on

  1. Go back to one of the places where you first met and bring up the memory by saying, “You were so nervous when we first came here.”
  2. Once a week, do something neither of you has tried before, such as walking around an unfamiliar neighborhood, eating food you have never had, or signing up for a class where you are both beginners
  3. Send one specific compliment a day. “You looked great today” (X) → “When I saw you smiling while talking to the clerk earlier, I felt again how warm you are with people” (O)
  4. Before sleeping, put your phones down for 5 minutes and create a “5-minute talk” where each of you shares one thing that happened that day

How to say “I don’t feel excited” without blaming them

If you start a complaint with “because of you,” the other person will become defensive first. Try making your own feelings and wishes the subject instead. For example, say it like this.

This kind of sentence contains “my wish + a specific suggestion” without blaming the other person. The key to talking about a slump is not pointing out the problem, but suggesting the next action you can take together.

A slump may mean attention has become blurred, not disappeared

In a long-term relationship, familiarity grows stronger than novelty. Familiarity itself is not bad, but when you start taking each other for granted, excitement easily becomes faint. Rather than seeing a slump only as the end of love, it is better to treat it as a signal to make attention visible again.

Small actions that differ from your usual routine are often more effective than a big trip or event. For example, walk through a new neighborhood instead of going to the restaurant you always visit, or leave a short note about something you had only been silently grateful for.

💡
Note: Excitement comes not from big events, but from “small things that are unexpected.” Once a month, secretly put a surprise note your partner does not know about in their bag or coat pocket.
