How to Sleep Well When Sharing a Room with Someone Who Snores

2026-06-11 · about 3 min read

The problem is not the volume, but the rhythm

Bed setup: keep heads far apart and stay close to the wall

If the room has twin beds, arrange your bed so your head faces the opposite direction from the person who snores. Even putting the two heads 1 m farther apart can noticeably reduce how loud the snoring feels. If the spot by the wall is available, choose it and lie with one ear buried in the pillow. That alone blocks about half the sound coming in.

Note: if you fall asleep first, you have practically won. Aim to lie down and fall asleep 15-20 minutes before the person who snores. After arrival, stop caffeine after 2 p.m. and drink only lukewarm water in the evening.

Three items are enough

They are small enough to fit into a single pouch. If you bring all three, most snoring becomes tolerable.

  • 2-3 pairs of foam earplugs, the kind you roll up and insert to fit the shape of your ears
  • 1 thin sleep mask, because blocking light helps you sleep more deeply
  • A small device or phone for white noise, with a steady sound such as rain or a fan at 30-40% volume

Bedtime order: just follow these steps

  1. 30 minutes before bed, dim the room lights by half and lower your screen brightness too.
  2. Play white noise quietly to create a background sound that fills the room.
  3. Put in earplugs, raise your pillow slightly higher than usual, and lie on your side; if you lie facing the ceiling, the sound is easier to hear.
  4. Put on the sleep mask and fall asleep while repeating 10 breathing cycles: inhale for 4 seconds and exhale for 6 seconds.

If you still wake up, signal instead of arguing

The worst thing to do when you wake up before dawn is to get angry and shake the person awake. You both lose sleep, and the mood turns sour. Instead, before going to bed, tell your companion in advance that snoring tends to decrease when they lie on their side. If you wake up in the middle of the night, agree on a signal: lightly tap their shoulder twice so they only need to change position. Lying on the back narrows the airway and can make snoring worse, so simply turning the person onto their side can quiet things down for a while. The next morning, do not blame anyone; just spend 1 minute discussing how to change the bed arrangement for the next night.
