Layering With Clothes You Already Have When It Suddenly Gets Cold

2026-06-11 · about 3 min read

Cold is blocked not by “thick clothes” but by “the number of layers”

On trips during the change of seasons, it is common for the temperature to be 22 degrees during the day and drop to 9 degrees at night. One thick coat only takes up space in your bag, and in the middle of the day you often end up carrying it around. The solution is several thin layers. Multiple air pockets form between the layers, improving warmth, and when you get hot you can take off one layer at a time to control your temperature. Even with only the clothes you already have, three well-built layers are enough to handle about a 5-degree chill.

The 3-step order for layering

  1. Layer 1 (base): Wear a thin long-sleeve shirt or cotton T-shirt that fits close to the body. This layer absorbs sweat and blocks cold air from touching your skin.
  2. Layer 2 (middle): Create an air layer with a shirt, sweatshirt, or thin knit. Put the second-warmest item you have here.
  3. Layer 3 (outer): Put a wind-blocking jacket, cardigan, or jumper on top. If it rains, a waterproof outer layer comes first.
  4. When it gets hot: Take off layers one by one from the top and put them in your bag or tie them around your waist. When it gets cold, put them back on in the reverse order.

Warmth priorities by body part

The areas where heat escapes faster than from the torso are the neck, wrists, ankles, and head. When you do not have enough clothing, covering these areas first can make it feel 2 to 3 degrees warmer. Rather than buying another bulky garment, using the small accessories you already have is better value.

  • Neck: If you do not have a scarf, wrap and tie a thin long-sleeve shirt around your neck.
  • Hands: Putting a pair of socks over your hands like gloves can work as a temporary fix.
  • Feet: Wear two layers of socks, and place dry tissue inside your shoes to reduce the cold coming through.
  • Head: Wear a hood or wrap a towel like a hat. More heat escapes from the head than you might expect.

What to pack for your next trip

  • 2 thin long-sleeve shirts, 1 shirt or knit, and 1 windbreaker: With these 4 items, you can handle temperatures from 18 degrees down to 8 degrees.
  • 1 scarf or muffler: The accessory with the best warmth for its volume.
  • 2 extra pairs of socks: Warmth, backup use, and temporary gloves in one.
  • 1 compression bag: More layering clothes means more bulk, so compress them when you are not wearing them.
💡
Tip: 5 minutes before going outside, briefly warm your outerwear on a radiator or in sunlight before putting it on. The initial chill disappears, it feels much warmer, and it also helps prevent your body from shivering and losing heat.
