How to Tell an Old Friend They Hurt You

2026-06-11 · about 4 min read

If you hold it in until it bursts, things fall apart more dramatically

When a friend of 10 years cancels plans on the same day three times in a row, we usually reply, "It's okay," while quietly marking them down in our mind. Then one day, over something small, "You're always like this" bursts out. When hurt feelings build up, they feel much bigger than they did at first.

The key is to speak as a report of your feelings, not as blame. "Why are you always late?" is an attack, but "During the 30 minutes I was waiting, I felt a bit lonely" is information. People defend themselves against attacks, but they open up to feelings.

A 4-step conversation you can use right away

  1. State only the situation, without judgment: "Last week's plan was canceled on the same day, and that was the third time this month."
  2. State your feelings in the first person: "At the time, I felt a bit pushed aside. I felt hurt."
  3. Ask instead of assuming: "Have you been really busy lately, or is something going on that I don't know about?"
  4. Make a small request about what you want: "If you think you might have to cancel next time, could you let me know just one day in advance?"

These 4 steps take a minute at most. When you talk too long, it invites excuses; when you are brief and clear, it invites an apology. In particular, if you skip step 3, the question, your friend may feel like they are being scolded one-sidedly and start by defending themselves.

Timing and place are half the conversation

Never bring it up in a group chat or in front of other friends. A private setting is best, and being sober at a cafe is better than bringing it up at the end of a drinking session. A call leaves less room for misunderstanding than texting, and a face-to-face talk leaves less room than a call. If you have to start by text, first make room for the conversation with one line: "There's something I'd like to talk about comfortably by phone."

What to avoid sayingA better way to say it
"You're always like this.""This happened three times recently."
"You're ignoring me.""I felt a bit ignored."
"Forget it, don't worry about it.""I'm bringing this up because it matters to me."
💡
Note: Before you speak, if you set up your first sentence with "I'm bringing this up not because I want to lose this friend, but because I want us to get along better," the other person's defenses will come down by half.

Even if your friend does not apologize right away, it is not a failure. It is enough to receive just one sentence of acknowledgment, such as "So that's how you felt." The older the friendship, the less you should try to resolve everything in one conversation. Count the act of honestly sharing your feelings as the success.

The longer the friendship, the more carefully you should speak

The reason it is hard to tell an old friend you feel hurt is that you worry the relationship might break. So you hold it in longer, and the longer you hold it in, the harsher your words become. When you first bring it up, it helps to state your purpose first: "I'm saying this not because I want to lose you, but because I want us to feel more comfortable together."

Even if the other person does not apologize right away, the conversation has not failed. Long-standing relationships are not settled completely with a single conversation. For today, simply expressing your feelings accurately is already a good enough beginning.
