If you already have a bike, you can get started for under 50,000 won by buying just a helmet and lights. The difficulty is two out of five stars. Riverside paths are separated from car traffic and have almost no slopes, so you only need to know how to ride straight.

Three Principles for Planning a Route

  • Plan it as a round trip: if you get excited and ride too far on the way out, the return will feel twice as hard. Set your turnaround point at 10km one way.
  • Factor in the wind: if you ride into a headwind on the way out, the tailwind on the way back will make the return easier.
  • Use a spot with a restroom or convenience store as your turnaround point: you can refill water and rest at the same time.

Getting Started

  1. Use a map app to find an entrance to a riverside bike path near your home, then draw a straight route in one direction along the river.
  2. Check whether there is a convenience store or rest area around the 10km one-way mark and set that as your turnaround point.
  3. Before leaving, check that your tire pressure and brakes are in good condition, and fill your water bottle.
  4. For the first 2km, ride gently to loosen up, as if warming up slowly.
  5. At the turnaround point, rest for 5-10 minutes, drink water, and stretch your legs.
  6. On the way back, do not push too hard. If you are tired, stop once more along the way. Aim to finish within 2 hours total.

How to Enjoy It Safely

Riverside paths are often shared with pedestrians out for a walk. When passing from behind, ring your bell twice or announce yourself by voice, and keep your speed at 25km/h or below. If you are riding around sunset, lights are not optional; they are essential.

💡
Note: once your first route feels familiar, do not increase the distance all at once. Focus on riding the same route faster. Your fitness will improve without injury.
