A Weekly Review to Check Goals and Reset Direction
Why New Year’s Goals Disappear by March
The purpose of a weekly review is not self-blame, but adjustment. A week is short enough that even if it goes badly, you can fix things right away the following week, making it a unit you can look at honestly without guilt.

Set a Fixed 30-Minute Slot on Sunday Evening
If you do a review only “when you have time,” you will never do it. Fix the day and time. A good option is 30 minutes on Sunday evening, from 8:30 to 9:00. Set a weekly repeating phone alarm labeled “weekly review,” and you will not miss it.
A Review Format You Can Finish with 4 Questions
- Write down 1 thing you did best last week and analyze in one line why it went well.
- Write down 1 thing you postponed or failed to do against your goal, along with the real reason, distinguishing whether it was lack of time or lack of motivation.
- Rewrite your 3 major goals and score each from 0 to 10 for “how much closer did I get this week?”
- Choose 1 specific action for each goal next week, including the day and time, and put it directly on your calendar.
For example, if your score for the goal “study English” is 2, next week’s action should be a sentence with a fixed time and place, such as “use a vocabulary app for 10 minutes on the subway to work on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.” The score itself matters less than changing your behavior after seeing a low score. That is the whole point of the review.
Score Trends Show Your Direction
If you fill in one table cell each week with a 0-to-10 score, just 4 weeks of data will show at a glance which goals keep staying at the bottom. If a goal scores 3 or lower for 3 weeks in a row, it is likely a poorly set goal. In that case, reducing the goal or even deciding to let it go is also a legitimate outcome of the review.
| Goal | Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 | Action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Exercise 3 times a week | 4 | 6 | 7 | Maintain |
| Study English | 2 | 2 | 1 | Reduce volume by half |
| Side project | 5 | 3 | 6 | Fix a 2-hour weekend slot |
If you keep this table on the first page of your notebook or as a pinned note in your memo app, each weekly review becomes a continuation rather than a fresh start. Once you can see the flow, it naturally becomes clear what to drop and what to focus on.
