A Weekly 5-Minute Routine
- After showering, rinse the bathroom walls and silicone gaps with cold water for 30 seconds to wash away soap scum.
- Use a squeegee to sweep water down from the walls, glass, and silicone 5 to 6 times.
- Wipe once along the silicone caulking line with a dry towel.
- Run the ventilation fan for another 20 minutes or open the door to let moisture out.
- Once a week, scrub the silicone gaps for 1 minute with a toothbrush dipped in water mixed with neutral detergent to scrape off soap scum.
Mold feeds on soap residue and dead skin cells. Water alone will not remove them, so the once-a-week step of physically scraping them off with a toothbrush is important. For mold prevention, ventilation is more effective than cleaning.
Only When Early Mold Appears
- Wear rubber gloves and a mask, and open a window for ventilation.
- Apply mold-removal gel or diluted oxygen bleach to a cotton swab or kitchen towel, then place it only on the blackened area.
- Leave it covered for 10 to 15 minutes, scrub gently with a toothbrush, and rinse thoroughly with water.
- Wipe completely with a dry towel so no moisture remains.
What Never to Do
- Mix chlorine bleach products with acidic cleaners such as vinegar or citric acid — chlorine gas may form
- Spray bleach with the ventilation fan and windows closed
- Leave lifted silicone as it is — water collects inside and turns it into a mold breeding ground

Note: If silicone caulking has yellowed, lifted, and mold has spread inside, replacement is the answer rather than cleaning. If you only wipe the surface, it will come back within 1 to 2 weeks.
