How to Hang a Comforter So It Dries Well After Washing

2026-06-11 · about 3 min read

The Real Reason Comforters Do Not Dry Well

Remove as Much Water as Possible Before Hanging

  1. At the end of the wash cycle, add one more spin cycle to remove as much absorbed water as possible.
  2. Drape the comforter over the edge of the bathtub or a drying rack for 5 minutes so the heavy water can drain out naturally.
  3. Press it with both hands in a downward sweeping motion from top to bottom, but do not twist it. Twisting makes the filling clump.

When the spin cycle removes enough water, drying time can be reduced by nearly half. If you hang it while water is still dripping, the weight makes it sag and blocks airflow, so it will not dry well.

How to Hang It So the Inside Dries Too

  1. Spread the two bars of the drying rack about shoulder-width apart and drape the comforter in an 'M' shape so the center stays lifted instead of folded.
  2. If any folded areas form, change the position every 1 to 2 hours so the inside also gets airflow.
  3. On clear days, face it toward the sun; on cloudy days, set a fan on low and aim it diagonally from below the comforter.
  4. For the final 30 minutes, flip the comforter once and spread out the compressed side to finish drying.
💡
Note: Aim the fan diagonally upward from below the comforter rather than straight at the front. This lets the air pass between the layers of filling and dry the inside faster.

Do not fold it immediately just because it seems dry. Check whether the cool, heavy feeling is gone when you touch it. If it feels lukewarm and light, it is dry all the way through. Let it air out for just 30 more minutes before folding to prevent it from becoming damp in storage.
