How to Tidy Your Desk to Reduce Cable Tangles
Why Do Cables Keep Getting Tangled?
Cable tangles happen when “extra length has nowhere to go.” Outlets are usually under the desk while devices sit on top, so the leftover cable length twists together behind the desk. If you do not first sort out which cable goes where, everything will get tangled again within a few days, even if you tie it up.

Start with the Supplies
- Around 10 Velcro hook-and-loop cable ties — they are easier to loosen and tighten than plastic cable ties.
- Cable labels, or masking tape and a permanent marker
- One power strip and double-sided tape, or 5 to 6 hook-style clips
- One spiral tube or small container for coiling long cables
A One-Pass Tidying Sequence
- Turn off every device on the desk and unplug everything from the outlet.
- Remove the cables one by one and label both ends with the device name.
- Coil any extra length in a figure-eight shape about the width of your palm, around 10cm, and secure it with Velcro. If you coil it only in a circle, it tangles more easily.
- Attach the power strip to a desk leg or the back of the desk with double-sided tape so it does not roll around on the floor.
- Hang 1 to 2 charging cables that you unplug often on clips near the front edge of the desk so they are easy to reach.
- Gather the remaining cables to one side behind the desk to create a clear path, and tie them once every 50cm to keep them from sagging.
If you label the cables, you will not have to rummage through the whole bundle later when you need to remove just one device. Figure-eight coiling offsets the cable’s natural twist direction, so it helps the cable straighten out when you unwind it.
Keeping It from Falling Apart
| Frequency | Task |
|---|---|
| Daily | Hang used charging cables back on their assigned clip |
| Weekly | Check whether the bundles behind the desk have loosened and tighten them again |
| Monthly | Pick out unused cables and adapters and move them to a drawer |
The key to tidying is “giving everything a place.” If even a single charging cable has a spot to return to, the desk will not become messy again even if you set it down without thinking after use. Once you set things up properly, one minute a day is enough to maintain it.
