When to Replace a Water-Filled Dehumidifier Box and Where to Place It

2026-06-11 · about 3 min read

Dehumidifier boxes collect moisture by “dissolving” water from the air

The white granules in a container-type dehumidifier are usually calcium chloride. As these granules absorb moisture from the air, they dissolve and collect as water in the lower compartment. That means the more the granules shrink and the more water builds up, the weaker the dehumidifying effect becomes. Replace it before the water is completely full to maintain its effectiveness.

How to judge replacement timing

  • When the water compartment reaches 70~80% on the scale, it is time to replace it. If you wait until it is completely full, it will barely work during the final week.
  • Replace it if you hear a loud sloshing sound when you shake it and the granules in the upper compartment have shrunk to less than half.
  • How long it lasts varies by season and location: a closet during the summer rainy season usually lasts 3~4 weeks, while a living room in dry winter may last 8 weeks or more. Checking the scale once a month is enough.

Where should you place it for better absorption?

Moisture is heavy and sinks downward. As a rule, place the dehumidifier box low in the space, where humidity tends to collect. However, it is safer to place it on a tray so spilled liquid does not touch clothes or appliances.

  1. Closet or shoe cabinet: place it in a corner of the lowest shelf. Put it on a small dish so the liquid does not touch clothes.
  2. Room or living room: place it 5~10cm away from the floor near a window or wall corner so air can circulate.
  3. Under the kitchen sink: since there is a lot of moisture around pipes, keep one container there at all times.
  4. One container is suitable for about 1.5 pyeong, so in a large room, place two containers separately at opposite ends.
💡
Note: The collected water is dissolved calcium chloride solution, so it is slippery and irritating. If it touches your hands, wash them immediately. Pour it into the toilet or drain with plenty of running water. Never mix it in one container with another cleaning liquid such as bleach, and dispose of the container separately according to its recycling label.
