Drawer Dividers That Let You See Socks and Underwear at a Glance

2026-06-11 · about 2 min read

When stacked, you can’t see them; when upright, everything is visible

Do not buy dividers; make them yourself

You can buy dedicated dividers, but a delivery box lying around at home is enough. Cut it to match the drawer depth, and it fits perfectly for free. A good compartment size is 8 cm by 8 cm for socks and 11 cm for underwear.

Small rules that keep it organized longerOnly one type per compartment: do not mix ankle socks, crew socks, and stockings
  1. Measure the inside width, depth, and height of the drawer with a tape measure. Usually, a height of 10 to 12 cm is enough.
  2. Open up a sturdy delivery box and cut it into strips 1 cm lower than the drawer height, for example 9 cm.
  3. Use scissors to cut slots halfway down the strips at intervals, creating grooves so the pieces can interlock in a crosshatch grid.
  4. Fit the slots together at right angles to make a grid, then place it in the drawer. With 8 cm compartments, one drawer can hold 12 to 16 compartments.
  5. Fold socks twice with the ankle section tucked inward to make a rectangle, then stand them upright. Do not pull the elastic over and turn them inside out.
  6. Fold underwear vertically three times until it is about palm-sized, then stand each piece upright in the same direction.
  7. Place frequently used pairs in the front row and seasonal items in the back row, setting the order by how easily your hand reaches them.

Small rules that keep it organized longer

  • Only one type per compartment: do not mix ankle socks, crew socks, and stockings.
  • Always put newly folded clean socks in the back row so you naturally wear the older ones first.
  • Gather unmatched socks in one “lost sock” compartment at the very front of the drawer, and empty it if their mates do not appear within 3 weeks.

Once you divide the drawer this way, the shape stays intact without collapsing, so after one organizing session you will not need to redo it for two or three months. The 1 to 2 minutes you used to spend rummaging for matching socks in the morning are saved as they are.

💡
Tip: If you cover the outside of the delivery-box strips with colored paper or wrapping paper, the brown corrugated cardboard is hidden and it looks like a storage box you paid for.
