Ventilation Tips to Remove Moisture from Your Mattress and Keep It Fresh
Every night, a cupful of sweat enters your mattress
During 7 to 8 hours of sleep, a person releases an average of 200 to 500ml of moisture through sweat and breathing. A considerable amount passes through the sheets and remains between the foam and springs inside the mattress. If you place a mattress directly on the floor or use a bed frame with poor airflow, this moisture cannot escape, and condensation forms on the underside of the mattress because of the temperature difference between the surface and the floor. Once black mold spots appear, they can spread into inner materials that cannot be washed, so the key to mattress care is removing moisture before mold has a chance to grow.

Set a ventilation routine by interval
| Interval | Task | Time required |
|---|---|---|
| Every morning | Fold the blanket toward the foot of the bed and expose the mattress surface | 30 minutes after waking |
| Once a week | Open the window and use a fan to blow air across the mattress surface | 1 to 2 hours |
| Once a month | Stand the mattress upright to ventilate the underside | 2 to 3 hours |
| Once a season | Absorb moisture with baking soda, then vacuum | About 40 minutes of work |
Steps for drawing out internal moisture with baking soda
- Remove all sheets and pads, then vacuum the mattress surface once.
- Sprinkle baking soda evenly over the entire mattress. For a single mattress, about 100g is enough, lightly scattered by hand.
- Leave it for at least 1 hour, or 3 hours if possible. The baking soda absorbs moisture and odor.
- Use a strong-suction nozzle to vacuum up every bit of baking soda. If powder remains, it can make you itchy while you sleep.
- Finally, open the window and ventilate for 30 minutes to finish.
What not to do
Some people spray bleach to remove moisture quickly, but if bleach remains inside the foam, it can irritate your respiratory system throughout the night and discolor the mattress. Also, never mix bleach with other mold removers, especially acidic products, because toxic gas can be produced. If mold has already spread widely, it is safer for your health to consider replacing the mattress instead of trying to scrub it forcefully.
