Space-Saving Folding Methods for Seasonal Wardrobe Changes
Stand Clothes Upright Instead of Stacking Them to Double Your Space
When you stack clothes horizontally, the items underneath are hidden, so you end up wearing only what is on top, and the pile collapses when you pull something out. If you stand clothes upright like books on a shelf, you can see everything at a glance and fit 1.5 to 2 times more in the same drawer. The key is to fold each category to a consistent width that matches the drawer depth.

Folding T-Shirts and Thin Clothing
- Lay the T-shirt flat with the back facing up, then fold both sleeves inward to make a rectangle.
- Fold the left and right sides toward the center so the width is divided into three lengthwise sections.
- Fold upward from the bottom twice, as if rolling it into thirds, to make a palm-sized rectangle.
- Stand it in the drawer with the folded side facing up, lining pieces up side by side like books on a shelf.
Folding Thick Knits and Winter Clothes
- Fold knitwear on a flat surface instead of hanging it so it does not stretch.
- Cross both sleeves in an X shape across the back to reduce the width.
- Fold the hem halfway up, then fold it in half again to make four layers.
- If compression is needed, slowly press out the air with your knee or palm before standing it upright.
For padded jackets or thick outerwear, vacuum compression bags can reduce volume significantly, but strongly compressing down products made with goose or duck down for more than 6 months can reduce their loft recovery. For down items, it is better to store them in a loose nonwoven cover with enough room to breathe.
Finishing Before Storage
- If possible, wash and fully dry clothes before putting them away — leftover sweat and oil stains can cause yellowing and attract moths
- Place moth repellent near the top of the compartment so it does not touch clothing directly
- Attach labels or photos to the front of boxes so you can find items immediately next season
| Clothing type | Folding width standard | Storage method |
|---|---|---|
| T-shirts and underwear | 1/3 of drawer depth | Stand upright |
| Knits and sweatshirts | 1/2 of drawer depth | Stand upright |
| Padded jackets and coats | Nonwoven cover | Store loosely lying flat |
💡
Note: Fill storage boxes only about 80%. If they are packed too tightly, deep creases will set in and you will only have more ironing to do next season.
