- Fill a pot with 5L of water and heat it to 80 degrees, just before boiling (keep it at 80 to 90 degrees because boiling over is dangerous).
- Lower the heat, add 4 tablespoons of baking soda and stir, then submerge the towels and simmer them over low heat for 15 minutes.
- Use tongs to take out the towels and rinse them once in cold water (touching them while hot can cause burns).
- Put the towels in the washing machine and run a standard wash with 1 dose of detergent.
- Add 200ml vinegar to the final-rinse compartment or fabric-softener compartment, and add one extra rinse cycle only.
- After spinning, spread the towels out immediately and dry them completely within 2 hours in a well-ventilated place.
Vinegar is acidic, so it neutralizes alkaline detergent residue and mineral buildup, helping the fibers loosen and feel soft again. However, never mix bleach (sodium hypochlorite) and vinegar. Toxic chlorine gas will be produced. Baking soda and vinegar should also not be used at the same time in the same container, because they will only foam and cancel out each other's effect.
