White Marks Are Hardened Minerals, Not “Dirt”

The cloudy marks left on stainless steel are not grease, but hardened mineral deposits such as calcium and magnesium left behind when tap water dries. That is why they do not come off no matter how much you scrub with ordinary dish soap. Alkaline minerals need to be dissolved with a weak acid. The key is not “scrubbing,” but “soaking with acid, then wiping.”

Supplies and Vinegar Concentration

• One spray bottle mixed at a 1:1 ratio of food-grade vinegar (6-7% acidity) and water
• 2 microfiber cloths (one for wiping, one for final polishing)
• 2 tablespoons baking soda and 1 soft toothbrush
• 3-4 dry kitchen towels

5 Steps to Make It Shine Like a Mirror

1. Step 1: First clean and rinse away food residue and grease from the sink with dish soap. If grease remains, the vinegar cannot reach the minerals.
2. Step 2: Spray the vinegar water evenly over the stained areas and leave it for 3-5 minutes. If it dries, spray again to keep the surface moist.
3. Step 3: Around the drain or the base of the faucet where water scale is thick, use a toothbrush lightly coated with baking soda and scrub along the grain for 30 seconds at a time.
4. Step 4: Rinse off the vinegar and baking soda completely with lukewarm water. If acidic residue remains, it can actually cause stains.
5. Step 5: Wipe away moisture with a dry microfiber cloth, then use a second dry cloth to polish along the grain in one direction only for 10 seconds. Circular wiping can leave fine streaks.

The wiping direction also affects the shine. Stainless-steel surfaces have a fine grain running horizontally or vertically, and wiping in the same direction as that grain helps light reflect smoothly. Run your finger over the surface; the smoother direction is the grain.
