Small balances look minor, so they are easier to waste

The 2,000 won left on a single Gifticon is easy to forget with a thought like, “Oh, it’s not that much.” But if just 10 of those balances pile up in a year, 20,000 won simply disappears. The trap with leftover balances is that the smaller they are, the lower they fall on your priority list, and once the expiration date passes, there is no way to recover them.

How to recover balances by type

TypeWhen balance remainsHow to use it fully
Value-type GifticonPay only 8,000 won with a 10,000 won voucherUse the remaining 2,000 won first on your next visit, and check the balance on the receipt or in the app
Exchange-type Gifticon with a designated productThe list price rises and a price difference occursPay only the difference in cash and exchange it; do not give up
Paper gift certificateThe face value is higher than the item priceCheck the change payout rules, then receive the change in cash
Stored-value card balanceSmall leftover amounts of 300 to 900 wonCombine the balance onto one card by recharging, or use small payments to bring it down to 0 won

Because the rules differ by type, the first step is to identify whether it is value-type or exchange-type when you receive it. Value-type Gifticons leave a remaining balance, while exchange-type Gifticons usually let you receive an item whose list price has risen if you pay the difference.

4 steps to bring the balance to 0 won

  1. As soon as you receive a Gifticon, write down “brand / amount / expiration date” in a notes app.
  2. Sort them by the nearest expiration date. Anything expiring within 30 days goes at the top.
  3. When using one, match the payment amount so the remaining balance becomes exactly 0 won. Example: if it is a 7,000 won voucher, choose a menu item close to 7,000 won.
  4. If it is hard to match the amount exactly, pay only the shortfall in cash or by card so you use the full face value.

A practical example: if you use a 9,000 won drink Gifticon to buy only one 6,000 won drink, 3,000 won gets stuck as leftover balance. Instead, add a 3,000 won dessert to the 6,000 won drink and make the total exactly 9,000 won, bringing the balance to 0 won. If it is a value-type Gifticon that cannot be used up all at once, simply getting into the habit of taking out that card first on your next visit can prevent the balance from disappearing.

Sort by type on the day you receive it

Gifticons are used differently depending on whether they are value-type or exchange-type. For value-type Gifticons, the key is to match the balance and use it up completely. For exchange-type Gifticons, check whether you can pay the difference or substitute another product. If you sort them on the day you receive them, you will not be scrambling right before expiration.

Even if the remaining balance looks small, it becomes real money when it adds up. Set an alert for 3 days before expiration, and combine drinks or desserts to match the remaining amount so you can bring the balance close to 0 won.

💡
Note: For Gifticons nearing expiration, register an alert in your phone calendar for 3 days before the expiration date. “Saving it because it feels wasteful, then letting it expire” is the most common cause of balance loss.
