What Heels Leave Behind in Your Feet

When you wear high heels for a long time, your body weight shifts toward the front of the foot, your toes are squeezed into a narrow toe box, and your calf muscles stay shortened and become stiff. That is why your feet ache and swell in the evening. The key to recovery is to stretch out the compressed toes, lengthen the shortened calves, and drain the fluid that has pooled in the feet.

A 60-Minute After-Work Foot Recovery Routine

  1. Right after getting home: take off your shoes, spread your toes wide for 5 seconds, then relax them. Repeat 10 times. This helps open the spaces between toes that were squeezed by a narrow toe box.
  2. After 5 minutes: soak your feet alternately in cold water for 3 minutes and warm water for 3 minutes, for 2 sets total, about 12 minutes. As the blood vessels constrict and relax, this helps reduce swelling and clear fatigue-related waste products.
  3. After the contrast bath: place your hands on a wall, step one leg back, keep the heel on the floor, and stretch each calf for 20 seconds, 3 times on both sides. This is the key move for lengthening shortened calves.
  4. Next: place a golf ball or tennis ball on the floor and roll it back and forth under the sole of your foot for 1 to 2 minutes. This gently loosens the plantar fascia and reduces arch pain.
  5. To finish: lie down with your legs raised against a wall at a 45 to 90 degree angle for 10 to 15 minutes. Fluid that has pooled in the feet returns toward the heart, and the swelling visibly goes down.

How to Keep Your Feet Less Tired Tomorrow

  • On days when you wear high heels, carry flat shoes in your bag and change into them at least while commuting or moving around.
  • While seated, rotate your ankles clockwise and counterclockwise 10 times each every hour to keep them from stiffening.
  • If the front of your foot often hurts, place a cushioned pad in the front of your shoe to spread out the weight load.
💡
Tip: Before going to sleep, use your fingers to gently spread the spaces between your toes for 1 minute and softly stroke the top of your feet. Your feet will feel noticeably lighter the next morning.

If numbness, tingling, or sharp pain in the front of the foot or toes continues even after changing shoes, or if it gradually worsens, it may involve a nerve or joint issue, so it is best to consult an orthopedic specialist.

On Heel Days, Release Both the Forefoot and Calves

When you wear heels for a long time, your weight concentrates at the front of the foot and your calves stiffen in a shortened position. Once you get home, it is best to change into comfortable shoes, spread your toes, and slowly stretch your calves in that order.

If tingling or numbness in the front of the foot continues, it may not be simple fatigue. The next day, give your feet a break with lower heels or cushioned shoes.
