One thumb is being made responsible for the entire screen

When you hold your phone in one hand and navigate the screen with only your thumb, the fleshy area below the thumb and the inside of the wrist can start to ache. The thumb uses muscles originally meant for gripping, so when it is used all day for repeated swiping and tapping, fatigue builds up in the small muscles and tendons. Pain is a signal telling you to stop and rest, so the first step is to change your posture instead of ignoring it and continuing to use your phone.

Start with posture that reduces strain

  • Do not hold your phone with only one hand. Support it with one hand and use the index finger and thumb of the other hand as well. This spreads out the work concentrated on one thumb.
  • For long text, switch to voice input or two-handed typing. Typing for a long time on a narrow keyboard with your thumb places the greatest strain on it.
  • Keep your elbow close to your side and raise the screen to eye level. If you hold your arm stretched far forward, your wrist bends more.
  • Every 30 minutes, switch the hand holding the phone to the other hand so fatigue does not build up on just one side.

Thumb and wrist release sequence

  1. Shake your hand lightly for 10 seconds, as if flicking off tension.
  2. Fold your thumb into your palm and gently wrap the other four fingers around it, then slowly tilt your wrist toward the little-finger side and pause for 10 seconds where you feel a stretch. Keep it to a feeling of stretching, not pain, and repeat 3 times.
  3. Gently bend your thumb back away from the palm, hold for 5 seconds, and repeat 3 times.
  4. Lightly touch the base of the little finger on the same hand with the tip of your thumb, then open it back up. Repeat 10 times to move the thumb joint gently.
  5. Using the thumb of your opposite hand, rub the fleshy muscle below the thumb, between the thumb and wrist, in small circles for 30 seconds.
  6. Finally, spread your fingers wide and then make a fist 10 times to encourage blood flow through the whole hand.

To avoid worsening the pain

On days when your thumb is already throbbing, reducing use of that hand is the best way to recover. Do not overdo it; perform the sequence above once every 2 to 3 hours. Soaking your hand in warm water for 5 minutes softens the tendons and makes stretching easier. On the other hand, if the pain is acute with swelling and heat, cool it briefly instead of warming it, and rest that hand.

💡
Tip: Before going to sleep, place the aching hand slightly higher than your heart, such as on a pillow. This can ease swelling and dull pain, making the next morning more comfortable.

If the base of your thumb is swollen and catches with a 'click' when you move it, if pain continues for more than 2 weeks even with rest, or if numbness appears as well, do not just endure it. Consult a professional and check the cause.

On days when your thumb hurts, reduce use first

Holding a phone in one hand for a long time keeps the thumb and the inside of the wrist under constant tension. Holding the phone with both hands, using a stand, or touching the top of the screen with the other hand can reduce the strain.

On throbbing days, rest time matters more than stretching. If swelling, catching, or numbness continues, do not dismiss it as simple fatigue. It should be checked.
