About 1 to 2 hours after lunch, there comes a moment when your eyelids feel heavy and the text on your screen starts to blur. This is not a lack of willpower; it happens because post-meal blood flow and body temperature rhythms naturally dip. Instead of having another cup of coffee, stand up and move your body for just 5 minutes, and the drowsiness will fade much faster.

Why movement helps clear drowsiness

Drowsiness worsens when blood flow and oxygen to the brain decrease and your posture stays fixed in one position. Briefly using large muscles gently raises your heart rate, speeds up circulation, and sharpens your mind. The key is not to move intensely, but to move often and briefly.

A 5-minute routine you can do at your desk

  1. Stand up from your chair with your feet shoulder-width apart. Interlace your fingers above your head, push upward, hold for 5 seconds, then lower your arms. Repeat 5 times.
  2. March in place for 30 seconds, lifting your knees to hip height, then move as if lightly jogging for another 30 seconds, for a total of 1 minute.
  3. Stand one step away from a wall, place your hands on the wall, and do 2 sets of 10 wall push-ups, resting 20 seconds between sets.
  4. Hold the back of your chair, bend one knee behind you, and pull the top of your foot with your hand to stretch the front of your thigh for 10 seconds. Do this twice on each side.
  5. Finally, roll your shoulders backward in large circles 10 times, then slowly tilt your neck left and right, relaxing each side for 10 seconds.

Wake up your eyes and breathing too

Looking at a screen for a long time stiffens the eye muscles and can make drowsiness worse. Between movements, rest your eyes for 20 seconds by looking at something more than 6m away. At the same time, breathe in through your nose for 4 seconds and out through your mouth for 6 seconds, 5 times, to circulate enough oxygen and clear your head.

  • Slowly drink 200ml of water to prevent sluggishness caused by mild dehydration.
  • Open a window and ventilate the room for 1 to 2 minutes to lower indoor carbon dioxide levels.
  • Between 2 and 4 p.m., set an alarm and build the habit of standing up once every 90 minutes.
💡
Tip: If you set alarms at 90-minute intervals during the time of day when drowsiness is strongest, you can automatically keep up with your energy routine without relying on willpower.

If severe fatigue and drowsiness still recur every afternoon even after doing these movements, or if daytime sleepiness does not go away despite getting enough sleep, it may be related to sleep quality, so consider consulting a professional.

Break afternoon drowsiness with short movement

When drowsiness hits after lunch, try waking up your body before reaching for coffee. Stand up and briefly use large muscles such as your legs and shoulders to get your blood flowing and give your screen-tired eyes a rest.

A 5-minute routine is enough. If you stand up, do light squats, open your shoulders, look into the distance, and take long exhales in order, your head will feel a little clearer when you sit back down.
