When people say they do not have time to exercise, they often mean they do not have time set aside specifically for it. Walking is an exercise you can add to the routes you already take every day, without going to a gym. Instead of clearing out a whole part of your day, this article introduces a strategy of sprinkling several short walks throughout it.

The goal is "30 minutes a day, split up"

It is fine if you cannot walk for 30 minutes at once. Whether you split it into 3 sessions of 10 minutes or 6 sessions of 5 minutes, the daily total is the same. At first, start with an easy goal such as "5,000 steps a day," then increase it by 1,000 steps every 2 weeks.

Add walking to your route

  1. Commute: Get off one stop early, walk for 10 minutes, then finish the trip to your destination at a brisk pace.
  2. Office or home: Take the stairs for 2 to 3 floors instead of the elevator.
  3. Lunch: After eating, walk one 10-minute loop around the building before going back inside.
  4. Phone calls: When a call comes in, stand up instead of sitting and take it while marching in place or walking down the hallway.
  5. Evening: Between household tasks, such as hanging laundry or taking out recycling, deliberately take a longer way around.

What matters more than step count

  • Speed: A pace where you can talk with the person next to you but singing feels a little difficult is effective.
  • Posture: Look 5 to 10 m ahead, keep your shoulders open, and swing your arms naturally.
  • Shoes: Reduce strain on your feet with low-heeled sneakers that have cushioned soles.
  • Frequency: If every day feels burdensome, aim for 5 days a week; if you skip a day, simply add 10 more minutes the next day.

💡
Note: If you check your phone's step count just once every night before bed, on days when you are short, you will have an easy reason to fill the gap with a "5-minute walk before bed."

Walking puts relatively little strain on the knees and heart, making it a good exercise to continue for a long time. However, if your chest feels tight after walking, you become excessively short of breath, or pain repeatedly occurs in a specific joint, lower the intensity and consult a medical professional before increasing it again.

You do not need to create separate exercise time

Walking exercise can be started without special equipment or a long block of time. You can attach it to movements you already make, such as getting off one stop before your destination on the way to work, walking for 10 minutes after lunch, or using the stairs for one or two floors instead of the elevator.

Rather than deciding from the start to walk a lot, adding just 1,000 steps to your current step count is more sustainable. If pain or excessive breathlessness occurs after walking, it is better to lower the intensity.
